HPV vaccination reduces pregnancy complications

Pregnant women who were vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at school are less likely to experience serious pregnancy related complications according to University of Aberdeen research. Incidences of pre-eclampsia, pre-term prelabour rupture of membranes (water’s breaking early) and antepartum haemorrhage (bleeding after 24 weeks) were significantly reduced in women who had been vaccinated against the virus. This is the first study in the world to investigate the link between HPV vaccination and this broad range of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The full paper is published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Reproductive Biology. Funded by NHS Grampian Charity
